Usage/coverage
Suitable for: internal and external use
Recommended timbers: Iroko, Yellow Balau, Karri, Massaranduba, Bangkirai and Ipe
Applications: Decking, garden furniture, cladding and other exterior joinery.
2.5L will cover approximately 50m² in one coat depending on timber and method of application. Old/dry/porous/rough sawn timbers will consume more product.
Rough sawn timbers will increase consumption by a factor of 2 to 3. It is advisable to sand the timber surface first to create a smoother area to apply to or speak to one of the Team at Treatex to discuss further options to improve coverage.
Preparation/Application
Preparation
Treatex Iroko Oil works best on unfinished timbers. Previous finishes which stop Iroko Oil penetrating into the timbers (e.g. paints and other ‘closed’ finishes) must be fully removed prior to application. Previous porous finishes can be lightly sanded before over coating with 120 grit sandpaper, however, we cannot guarantee best performance when applying over an existing finish. When over coating a previously finished surface, a trial application is essential. Flaking or peeling finishes must be fully removed prior to application. Ensure the timber is dry and free from possible contaminates e.g. algae, grease, dirt, dust etc. Leave exotic/dense/oily timbers e.g. Iroko/Bangkirai to weather for at least 3 months or wash with warm, soapy water then rinse thoroughly and dry to remove resins. Timbers susceptible to mould
and fungi should be treated first with a suitable preservative.
We advise that when using Iroko Oil, sufficient product is purchased to complete the whole project and when more than one tin is required it is
advisable to mix them together before use. The timber must have a moisture content around 18% or lower and the ambient temperature must be between 8oc and 25oc during application and drying. Ensure that no rain is forecast before, during or after application or that timber is treated in a dry environment. We strongly recommend a trial application prior to starting the project.
Application
Stir tins thoroughly, before and during use. Use a brush or roller to evenly apply Treatex Iroko Oil in the same direction as the wood grain. Pay particular attention to end grain, on end grain apply liberally. If possible, treat all sides of the timber for the first coat. After approximately 12 hours the first coat can be overcoated. Apply with a brush or roller a second coat of Treatex Iroko Oil. After the second coat leave for approximately 12 hours to dry. Treatex Iroko Oil is not a surface building product.
Tips
Treatex brushes and rollers are available. Wet brushes and rollers can be cleaned with Treatex Thinner or white spirit. Store tins in a cool and frost free environment. Unopened tins will last for five years. Once tins are opened, transfer contents to smaller airtight container.
