Product Specs
Usage/coverage
Suitable for: internal and external use on hardwood surfaces
Recommended Timbers: Ideal for Bangkirai, Yellow & Red Balau, Karri, Massaranduba, Iroko, and Ipe. Not suitable for high tannin content timbers (e.g. oak)
Applications: Perfect for decking, garden furniture, and cladding. It’s also suitable for interior wooden finishes where high performance is required.
Coverage: A 2.5L tin will cover approximately 50m² in one coat, depending on the timber’s texture and porosity. Ensure proper application to achieve optimal results.
Rough sawn timbers will increase consumption by a factor of 2 to 3. It is advisable to sand the timber surface first to create a smoother area to apply to or speak to one of the Team at Treatex to discuss further options to improve coverage.
Preparation/Application
Preparation
Treatex Bangkirai Oil works best on unfinished timbers. Previous finishes which stop Bangkirai Oil penetrating into the timbers (e.g. paints and other ‘closed’ finishes) must be fully removed prior to application. Previous porous finishes can be lightly sanded before over coating with 120 grit sandpaper, however, we cannot guarantee best performance when applying over an existing finish. When over coating a previously finished surface, a trial application is essential. Flaking or peeling finishes must be fully removed prior to application. Ensure the timber is dry and free from possible contaminates e.g. algae, grease, dirt, dust etc. Leave exotic/dense/oily timbers e.g. Iroko/Bangkirai to weather for at least 3 months or wash with warm, soapy water then rinse thoroughly and dry to remove resins. Timbers susceptible to mould
and fungi should be treated first with a suitable preservative.
We advise that when using Bangkirai Oil, sufficient product is purchased to complete the whole project and when more than one tin is required it is
advisable to mix them together before use. The timber must have a moisture content around 18% or lower and the ambient temperature must be between 8oc and 25oc during application and drying. Ensure that no rain is forecast before, during or after application or that timber is treated in a dry environment. We strongly recommend a trial application prior to starting the project.
Application
Stir tins thoroughly, before and during use. Use a brush or roller to evenly apply Treatex Bangkirai Oil in the same direction as the wood grain. Pay particular attention to end grain, on end grain apply liberally. If possible, treat all sides of the timber for the first coat. After approximately 12 hours the first coat can be overcoated. Apply with a brush or roller a second coat of Treatex Bangkirai Oil. After the second coat leave for approximately 12 hours to dry. Treatex Bangkirai Oil is not a surface building product.
Tips
● Use Treatex brushes and rollers. These are specially designed for applying Treatex products for a smooth, even finish.
● Wet brushes and rollers can be cleaned with Treatex Thinner or white spirit for easy maintenance and reuse.
● Store unopened tins in a cool, frost-free environment to maintain product longevity. Once opened, transfer remaining product to a smaller airtight container.
● Always test a small area of the timber to ensure the desired result, particularly when applying over previously treated surfaces.
