Preparation
Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra works best on untreated timber but can be applied over a previous coating of hardwax oil if it is clean and suitable for treating. If in doubt of the type of finish, it is better to fully remove. Sand the timber to 120 grit to provide best absorption. Do NOT wash the surface with white spirit etc. or water after sanding. All sawdust should be removed with a hoover or tac cloth. Ensure that enough product has been purchased to complete the work as required. If applying to a floor with underfloor heating, make sure that the heating has off long enough for the floor to cool (at least 24hrs) and don’t switch on until the Hardwax Oil has dried sufficiently.
Application
Stir tin(s) thoroughly before applying. Evenly apply the first coat with a good quality brush (Treatex brushes are available) or a short pile micro fibre roller. Leave to dry for 3-6 hours, allowing sufficient ventilation to the room will ensure a reliable drying time. Once dry, apply a second coat and leave to dry. The surface should be fine for careful use after 8 hours. Furniture can be place on floors after approximately 18 hours. Breathable covers e.g cardboard, rugs etc. should not be placed down for 72 hours, non-breathable, vapour proof coverings such as plastic sheeting should not be placed over the surface for at least 14 days.
Maintenance
For general cleaning
Can be cleaned with Treatex Floor Care (concentrate for mop and bucket) or Treatex Spray On Floor and Surface Cleaner (pre diluted.) Follow instructions to keep floors, worktops and other surfaces clean and maintained.
For periodic surface maintenance
When the surface begins to look tired but not worn through to bare timber, the following processe can be followed:
Surface can be cleaned with Treatex Preparation Cleaner (cleans surface and removes small layer of wax). Once dry, a coat of Treatex Wax Polish can be buffed in or a fresh coat of Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear can be applied and left to dry.
Tips
- Do not apply the product too thickly as drying time will be significantly increased. The best conditions for drying are to raise the room temperature and increase the airflow using windows, a fan or opening a door.
- We stock great-quality Treatex brushes and rollers for use. alternatively use a high-quality microfibre roller or brush.
- Wrap a plastic bag around wet rollers and brushes to prevent them from drying out between coats.
- Treatex Thinners or white spirit are the best way to clean wet brushes and rollers.
Self combustion
- Treatex contains Linseed oil just like other natural oil-based products. You should therefore empty the sawdust out of your mechanical sander before working with anything that has a freshly applied linseed oil-based product. This is because there is a small but possible risk of self-combustion.
Sanding requirements
- Sanding is not usually required between coats of hardwax oil, however there is a chance that the grain may raise. If that is the case, a light sand at 120 grit will help smooth the surface.

Choosing between Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear and Soft White
We offer two types of Hardwax oil; Clear and Soft White. They are fundamentally the same product, but have two different effects. Whilst Clear can be used on pretty much any internal timber, Soft White has a specific job.
When Clear is applied to light coloured timbers such as oak, maple or very pale pines; it can have a warming or yellowing effect, bringing out a golden tone in the timbers. Whilst this is very pleasing, some people prefer the natural, pale appearance of the timber and this is where Soft White comes into effect.
Soft White contains a small amount of pigment that dries clear when applied. It is enough to help prevent the warming effect of the Clear hardwax oil
