Usage/coverage
Suitable for: internal and external use
Recommended timbers: Cedar and Larch
Applications: Cladding, doors, windows, shingles and other exterior joinery
2.5L will cover approximately 35m² in one coat depending on timber and method of application. Old/dry/porous/rough sawn timbers will consume more product.
Rough sawn timbers will increase consumption by a factor of 2 to 3. It is advisable to sand the timber surface first to create a smoother area to apply to or speak to one of the Team at Treatex to discuss further options to improve coverage.
Preparation/Application
Treatex Cedar Oil works best on unfinished timbers. Previous finishes which stop Cedar Oil penetrating into the timbers (e.g. paints and other ‘closed’ finishes) must be fully removed prior to application. Previous porous finishes can be lightly sanded before over coating with 120 grit sandpaper, however, we cannot guarantee best performance when applying over an existing finish. When over coating a previously finished surface, a trial application is essential. Flaking or peeling finishes must be fully removed prior to application.
Ensure the timber is dry and free from possible contaminates e.g. algae, grease, dirt, dust etc. Ideally, timbers should be allowed to weather for at least 3 months. Timbers susceptible to mould and fungi should be treated first with a suitable preservative.
We advise that when using Cedar Oil, sufficient product is purchased to complete the whole project and when more than one tin is required it is advisable to mix them together before use. The timber must have a moisture content around 18% or lower and the ambient temperature must be between 8c and 25c during application and drying. Ensure that no rain is forecast before, during or after application or that timber is treated in a dry environment. We strongly recommend a trial application prior to starting the project.
Application
Stir tins thoroughly, before and during use. Use a brush or roller to evenly apply Treatex Cedar Oil in the same direction as the wood grain. Pay particular attention to the end grain, applying wet on wet until no more is absorbed. After approximately 12 hours the first coat can be over coated. Apply with a brush or roller a second coat of Cedar Oil. After the second coat leave for approximately 12 hours to dry. If the timber still looks hungry, a third coat may be necessary.
Tips
Treatex brushes and rollers are available. Wet brushes and rollers can be cleaned with Treatex Thinner or white spirit.
Store tins in a cool and frost free environment. Unopened tins will last for five years. Once tins are opened, transfer contents to a smaller airtight container. Horizontal surfaces should be regularly inspected due to environmental factors such as standing water.
