Using Teak Protection To Maintain Garden Furniture: A Guide
For those looking to keep their outdoor furniture protected from both sunshine and rain, teak protection is the product for you. Whilst teak is a durable wood that is resistant to insects and most weather, teak products (such as outdoor furniture and boat decking) require protection and maintenance as time goes on - all in an effort to ensure that it is looking its best.
Read on to learn all there is to know about teak outdoor furniture protection, from how to use teak protection products to where you can find them.
Why Is Teak Protection Used?
For teak products, such as outdoor furniture or boat decks, protection from the elements ensures the teak is durable and long-lasting. Ensuring the teak won’t flake or peel, teak protection products are solvent-free, UV-resistant, and highly water-resistant.
How Often Do I Need To Use Teak Protection Products?
You should use teak outdoor furniture protection products once a year to ensure the wood is fully protected and enhanced.
It is worth noting when using teak protection for outdoor furniture, only treat two pieces at a time to ensure that the first coat cannot dry fully before applying the second wet on wet coat.
Applying The Product:
Before applying a product such as Treatex’s Teak Protection, previous finishes must be fully removed and weathered timber must be sanded and cleaned thoroughly. The teak must also be dry, with a moisture content of below 18%, and free from contaminants such as algae, dirt, grease, and dust. The temperature of the wood should be more than 8º during application and drying.
Before and during use, stir the container of Treatex’s Teak Protection thoroughly. Then, use a brush to evenly apply Treatex Teak Protection in the same direction as the wood grain. This should be done with liberal amounts, approximately 60-70ml per m².
Once the object you’re treating (such as outdoor furniture or a boat deck) has the first coat applied, the second coat should be applied. The best results arise when this is done “wet on wet”, meaning that the second coat should be laid before the first coat has fully dried.
After the second coat has been applied, you should leave it to dry for around 12 hours. If the Teak readily absorbs the second coat, however, be sure to apply a third coat before the second coat dries.
