How Our Treatex Hardwax Oil Stands Out From The Crowd

Natural wood can make a beautiful addition to any property, whether this comes in the form of traditional flooring, ornate furniture or outdoor decking. Long favoured for its practical qualities, wood also complements both modern and traditional aesthetics, adding a stylish flair to the most minimalist or eclectic of homes.

But if you want your wood to look good for the long term, it is essential to take good care of it. This starts with using the right wood treatment products, where one precision application could take your natural surfaces from drab to dazzling overnight.

Here at Treatex, we’re proud of our naturally superior wood finishes, with eco-friendly products that are quick and easy to apply. A cornerstone of our product range is the Hardwax Oil Ultra, an essential wood treatment that is designed to protect your wood whilst improving its appearance.

Read on to find out more about Treatex Hardwax Oil, with a look at our available products and how they should be applied.

The Hardwax Oil Product Range

We currently offer two different Hardwax Oil products at Treatex. With these products, you can either apply a subtle warming effect to your surfaces, or you can retain the light colour of paler woods.

The specifics of the Hardwax Oil range are discussed below:

Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear

Our Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear is the main product that we recommend for your flooring, where this option is designed to provide a warning effect on lighter coloured timbers. The Clear Matt edition is available in a 1 litre container, and can usually be applied without the need for sanding between coats.

Additionally, Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear must always be used as the final coat when Colour Tones are applied.

We suggest that you maintain your treatment with the help of our Traditional Wax Polish, whilst your treated surfaces can also be cleaned with Treatex Floor Care.

Hardwax Oil Ultra Soft White

Alternatively, you may also wish to consider our Hardwax Oil Ultra Soft White. This product can either be used on its own to retain the light colours of timber such as oak, or it can be applied as a top coal over Colour Tones Ultra Spruce, in order to leave a whiter finish.

Once applied, this product is designed to leave behind a hard wearing and attractive finish that is easy to maintain for the long term.

Essential Uses For Our Hardwax Oils

We design all our products with versatility in mind, so you can apply our wood treatments to a range of surfaces throughout your home. The uses of our Hardwax Oils are detailed here:

Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear

This product is designed to be applied inside the homes, on virtually every kind of timber. If your timbers are particularly dense or oily, then you may also wish to use a thinner for a more effective application.

As such, Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear can be used on a range of indoor surfaces, including floors, doors, worktops and furniture.

Hardwax Oil Ultra Soft White

Our Hardwax Oil Ultra Soft White product is also made for internal use, and can be applied onto most lighter coloured timbers. This could include oak, ash, beech or maple. For pines and softwoods, we recommend that you use Colour Tones Ultra Spruce, followed by Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear.

As with other Hardwax Oil products, this option can also be used on virtually any wooden surface in your home, including floors, skirting, stairs and woodturning projects.

Applying Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear

When applying any of our products, you should always consider the particular needs of your wooden surfaces, and the directions offered on the product you have chosen.

As an estimate, 1 litre of our Hardwax Oils will cover approximately 20m² in one coat, or 12m² in two coats, depending on your timber and your application method.

Here, we outline two methods for applying our popular Treatex Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear.

Method 1 - Buffing Machine

You may wish to buff your first coat of Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear with a purpose-built machine. If so you can follow these steps:

  1. Sand your surfaces if needed using materials with a 120-150 grit rating - our Hardwax Oil should always be applied to bare timber, or over a previous coat of Hardwax Oil.

  2. Apply a thin coat of Hardwax Oil Ultra Clear using a good quality roller, and leave to dry for 10 minutes.

  3. Slow buff with a soft pad to remove excess.

  4. Finish with a lint-free cloth under the buffer, then leave to dry with good ventilation for a further 45 minutes.

  5. Apply the final coat with a high-quality microfibre roller - do not buff this coat as there won’t be enough product left on the timber to protect properly.

  6. Your wooden surface will be ready for use after 8 hours of drying time. You can return furniture to your treated floors after approximately 18 hours.

Method 2 - Brush or Roller

You don’t need any specialist buffing equipment to apply your Hardwax Oil, where using a good quality brush or roller can be just as effective. For this method you should:

  1. Apply the first coat using a good quality brush or roller - do not apply too thickly, as this will extend the time it takes for the product to dry.

  2. Allow 3-6 hours for the product to dry, providing good ventilation and airflow.

  3. Apply the second coat using a high quality brush or roller.

  4. As with Method 1, your surfaces can be used normally after 8 hours, and furniture can be reinstalled after 18.

Remember - in order to create optimal drying conditions, you should raise your indoor temperature and increase airflow wherever possible.
