What Wood Cleaners Do I Need For My Natural Surfaces?
Natural wooden surfaces can enhance the appearance of any home, whether you have hardwood floors stretching throughout your interior, painted garden furniture installed outside, or a few chosen antique pieces in your living room. Wood helps to bring the natural world directly to your door, making for an attractive material wherever it’s found in your home or garden.
Importantly, your wooden surfaces need to be kept clean so that their natural beauty can shine through. Over time, a build up of dust, debris and dirt can cause your floor and furnishings to lose their natural appeal, where they will become more difficult to clean the longer they are neglected.
You can keep your wooden surfaces in top condition with the help of our extensive range of cleaning products. At Treatex, we understand exactly what your natural wood needs to stand the test of time, where you can rely on our cleaning range and the expertise of our team to keep your surfaces looking good.
Read on to find out more about which Treatex wood cleaner is right for your natural surfaces.
Interior Surfaces
The wooden surfaces inside your home are vulnerable to an accumulation of dirt, particularly in areas with heavy footfall. Beyond this, spillages and stains will naturally arise in any busy home, compromising the appearance of your wood over time.
Our impressive interior cleaning range has been specially designed for quick and easy applications, particularly when it comes to keeping your floors in good condition.
Your top options for indoor surfaces currently include:
Spray On Floor & Surface Cleaner
Our Spray On Floor & Surface Cleaner is the perfect choice for quick and efficient cleaning, where this can be used on flooring that has previously been treated with our Hardwax Oil.
When applying, we recommend that you lightly spray the surface in question without soaking it, then mop or buff the surface to reveal cleaner floors.
Floor Care
Our Floor Care stain remover has been designed to erase the blemishes that arise on your surfaces over time. It does this by forming a thin protective layer that will safeguard your wood for the long term.
When applying, this product should be diluted to the ratio of 25-50ml of Floor Care in 5 litres of water. You can then mop your surface with this solution, ensuring that your mop is only dampened by the solution and not soaking.
Wax Polish
Choose our Treatex Wax Polish if you’d like to protect your floors from wear and tear whilst also enhancing the appearance of the wood. This product can be used on surfaces that have been treated with Hardwax Oil, where it is designed to leave a non-slip, durable finish.
This product should be applied sparingly on clean floors, either with a small cloth or a slow buffing machine to ensure a streak free finish. You should then leave your polish to dry for 3-4 hours.
Preparation Cleaner
If you’re dealing with particularly worn surfaces that have been finished with Treatex Hardwax Oil, then our Preparation Cleaner is the best choice for you. This aggressive cleaner will leave your surface ready for refinishing, removing a small amount of wax with each application. As such, our Preparation Cleaner should not be used for regular cleaning.
To use our Preparation Cleaner, we advise that you dilute 50ml in 5 litres of water. Scrub the surface with the solution using a mop or brush, then rinse with clean water to remove any residue. Leave to dry for a minimum of 3 hours before reapplying your Hardwax Oil.
Exterior Surfaces
Your outdoor wooden surfaces are constantly at the mercy of the elements, where additional wear and tear can come from regular footfall as well as an influx of mud and dry leaves from the garden.
Taking good care of your exterior wood with Treatex cleaning products can help you to keep your outdoor surfaces in top condition all year round, where you may wish to find out more about the following options:
Stain Inhibitor
Our Stain Inhibitor is designed to prevent tannin staining on exterior wooden surfaces. Tannins naturally occur in authentic wooden surfaces, where they can bleed through a painted finish, leaving behind unpleasant stains. This product can therefore be used to prevent tannins from seeping through.
We recommend that you use a brush or roller to evenly apply your Stain Inhibitor in the same direction as the wood grain, leaving it to dry for 24 hours before painting. Typically, 2.5 litres of this product will cover a 30 metre squared space.
W216 Preservative
The Treatex W216 Preservative is an incredible wood treatment that offers unbeatable protection against fungal attack and blue timber staining. This can be applied to external surfaces such as windows, doors and fences - notably it should not be used on timbers that are in constant contact with the ground or with water.
You can use a brush, roller or an immersion technique to apply this product, where 1 litre covers around 4 - 6 metres squared. Leave the product to dry for at least 24 hours, during which time it should be protected from rainfall. We also recommend that you coat your outdoor timbers with a suitable finish after treatment.
Beyond Cleaning Products - How To Keep Your Flooring In Top Condition
When it comes to looking after your wood flooring, there is lots you can do in addition to applying Treatex cleaning products. Paying regular attention to your floors - as well as your wooden furniture, decking and cladding - can help to reduce wear and tear, keeping your surfaces in top condition for longer.
Some top cleaning techniques that you can use alongside our products include:
Sweeping - One of the best ways to keep your floors clear of debris is to sweep them regularly. You can do this with a soft bristle brush, where this tends to be more effective and gentle than using a vacuum.
Spill Management - Spills on your wooden floors and surfaces are an inevitability in a busy home, but this can be managed by responding quickly. Wring out a cloth and wipe as soon as possible to prevent staining, where you may need to apply a small amount of wood-specific stain remover to target the spot.
Minimal Soaking - Washing your floors with excess water or too much cleaning solution can cause the liquid to damage your wood. This can lead to lifting and warping, so it is essential that you wring out your cleaning tools thoroughly before use.
Correct Mopping - It is also important that you use the right mopping tool to clean your wood. Steam mops can warp your timber, whilst some mops can leave traces of lint behind. Microfibre tools are usually the best choice for wooden surfaces, where some mops will be designed specifically for this purpose.
Furniture - Handling your furniture correctly can help you to prevent scratches. Exert additional caution by adding protective pads or felt pieces to the bottom of your furniture, where you should also avoid dragging heavy pieces across the floor.
Footfall - Naturally some wooden surfaces in your home will be walked on more than others. You can manage the impact of this by removing outdoor shoes when you enter the house, or by wearing a clean pair when walking across decking and exterior timber.
Refinishing - In addition to regular cleaning, your wooden surfaces should also be refinished and touched up regularly to ensure that they look their best. Sanding, resurfacing, oiling and painting will help to protect your wood from dirt and reduce signs of wear.
