What is Cedar Oil?
Cedar oil is actually the name of two distinct products that can be easy to mistake. The first is an essential oil derived from various types of conifers - predominantly in the pine and cypress botanical families. It is produced from the foliage, and occasionally the wood, roots and stumps left behind after the logging of trees for timber. It has many natural properties and is widely used for art, perfumery, aromatherapy and pesticides.
The other cedar oil is what we will be focusing on in this article. This is a product that is used to enhance the natural beauty of exterior cedar surfaces, preventing degradation and keeping it in great condition. Read on to find out more
Uses for Cedar Oil
If you have any timber surfaces outside - such as a shed, decking or wooden garden furniture - it’s all the more essential to treat it because of the harsh weather conditions it’s exposed to that can lead to rot or deterioration. It’s always best to ensure that your timber is protected so that it will last much longer. Below are some of the instances in which cedar oil would come in handy.
Timber Fencing: Regardless of whether you choose to paint your fencing a certain colour, you will also absolutely need to protect it with a quality exterior oil first, and cedar oil is a great choice.
Decking: Deckings not only face the harsh elements all year round but also experience a lot of footfall that can wear down the wood over time. As a result, a quality oil such as cedar is needed. Cedar oil also provides a U- protective finish, which is ideal for surfaces such as deckings.
Garden Furniture: If you leave your garden furniture out all year long, or even just during the summer, it will also need a quality treatment to ensure that they help stay sturdy and durable. The last thing you want to do is sit down for your first barbecue of the year, only to find that your nice garden furniture is unusable due to rot. Cedar oil offers robust protection against damaging rays and waterproofing.
Sheds & Outbuildings: Naturally, as sheds and outbuildings are meant to be outside for their entire lifespan, you would hope that they are designed to last in this environment. However, even the most durable of sheds will eventually feel the effects of the elements, and any deterioration could also negatively impact what’s stored inside. You can stave off weather damage with cedar oil, which will prolong the life of your structure, helping it to deal with age more gracefully.
Where Can I Purchase Quality Cedar Oil?
For exposed outbuildings, clubhouses, sheds and studios, Treatex Cedar Oil is the ideal choice. Intended for use on external timber surfaces such as cedar and larch, Treatex Cedar Oil provides long-lasting protection against the elements, preventing water damage, weathering and degradation. Treatex also supplies Grey Cedar Oil, which is designed to immediately enhance the colour of cedar to achieve the naturally greyed effect that comes with age, whilst still offering protection and allowing the timber to mature. Grey Cedar Oil can be maintained through routine applications or simply be left to mature naturally over time as required.
Made from natural and sustainable raw materials, including sunflower, safflower and soybean extract, cedar wood treatment will keep your timber surfaces in great condition. With UV and water protection, easy application and no flaking or peeling, Treatex Cedar Oil is ready for anything, come wind, rain or shine.
Preparation & Application
Treatex Cedar Oil works best on unfinished timber. If there are previous finishes, make sure that they are fully removed before applying the cedar wood finish. Also ensure that surfaces are lightly sanded and free from any contaminants such as dirt, decay, mould and dust. You should always have enough cedar wood treatment to perform the whole task in one go, and if using more than one tin it’s advisable to mix them together before use.
The temperature must be between 8-25℃ during the application and drying process, ensuring that the timber has a moisture content below 18%. We also advise a trial application before starting the project. The Application should be carried out as follows:
Ensure that Treatex Cedar Oil is stirred thoroughly before and during use.
Use a roller or brush to evenly apply the cedar wood finish, making sure that it’s applied in the same direction as the wood grain. Apply liberally on the end grain. A 2.5L tin will cover approximately 35m2 in one coat, depending on the timber and method of application.
Leave for 12 hours before applying a second coat, then leave another 12 hours to dry.
What Other Wood Treatments are Available From Treatex?
Treating your exterior timber surfaces is incredibly important, and in doing so will help to reduce the impacts of weathering, fungi, rot and deterioration. Alongside Cedar Oil, Treatex supplies a variety of wood treatment products.
UV Oil & Exterior Oils
Continual sun exposure can have a lasting impact on your exterior wood surfaces, leading to an increased risk of discolouration and deterioration. Thankfully, Treatex UV Oil is here to help. This simple yet effective UV protective finish by Treatex is designed to provide resistance to the bleaching effects of the sun’s harsh rays. Penetrating deep into the surfaces of timber wood, UV Oil will attach to the capillaries, offering robust protection. Made from refined natural oils such as sunflower and soybean, UV Oil is an ideal treatment for a majority of vertical timber surfaces, including doors, windows and joinery. Treatex UV Oil will protect your exterior surfaces for years to come. Similarly, if you’re looking for quality exterior oils that offer UV protection and water resistance, Treatex Exterior Oils are effective in preventing the formation of cracks and swelling.
Teak Protection
Ideally suited to protecting wooden garden furniture and boat decks, teak protection possesses similar properties to most exterior wood preservers - providing a UV protective and waterproofing finish. However, Treatex Teak Protection requires a wet-on-wet application, instead of allowing each coat to completely dry first, meaning that the UV protection is vastly superior to that of other teak protection products.
Larch Oil
Similar to the above, Treatex Larch Oil is composed of a combination of natural oils, including sunflower, safflower and soybean. It provides protection against extreme climate conditions and is ideal for use on cladding, windows and doors.
Water-Based Wood Paint
Treatex supplies a variety of water-based products, including eco colours, teak protection, douglas fir protection and anti-slip decking oil.
For a product that is a little more sustainable, Treatex Eco Colours is a high-quality, environmentally friendly weather resistant paint, specifically formulated to comply with the increasingly stringent criteria relating to solvents and harmful VOCs in wood finishes. This odourless paint is made from refined natural oils and resins extracted from renewable sources. Microporous, water-repellant and solvent-free,
Eco Colours offers long-term protection against UV rays and other harsh weather conditions. It provides excellent adhesion to most timber surfaces whilst also being fast drying, easy to use and exceptionally durable. This is an indoor and outdoor paint that is suitable for many purposes, including doors, windows, sheds, cladding and joinery, and is available in 5 primary colours.
