Odourless Paint and Other Practical Solutions From Treatex

A renovation or decoration project can often be stressful enough as it is, so the last thing you want is to fall ill during the process. Unfortunately, certain paints emit fumes that can cause painful headaches and nausea, even in the most ventilated of rooms. So, how do you prevent this from happening?

One solution is to buy odourless paint. Not only will it not produce harmful fumes, but it is also free of damaging chemicals - which is not only better for your own health, but also better for the environment too. If you’re looking for a supplier of top-of-the-line odourless paint, Treatex is one such supplier. Our Eco Colours range is high-quality, environmentally friendly, weather resistant and designed to comply with the increasingly stringent criteria regarding solvents and harmful VOCs in wood finishes. This microporous, water-based wood paint is solvent free and can offer long-term protection against UV rays and harsh weather conditions. It provides excellent adhesion to most timber surfaces whilst also being fast drying, easy to use and exceptionally durable. If you want to undergo a decoration project as sustainably as possible whilst also protecting the health of yourself and those around you, Treatex Eco Colours is the odourless paint for you.

If you’d like to find out more about what Treatex products have to offer, we’ll take you through all of the benefits of odourless paint, along with other practical wood stain and timber preservation solutions.

Why Odourless Paint?

Depending on who you ask, the smell of fresh paint yields a response of either joy or disgust. The unique smell that we associate with cracking open a new tin is a result of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the paint. They can be found in many paints, protective coatings and solvents.

VOCs are added in to paints as a preventative measure to stop mildew from growing, and also to prolong the shelf life of the paint. However, many VOCs are also very toxic to human health, and even less dangerous varieties of it can cause nausea, headaches and dizziness.

The main problem lies in the fact that VOCs have an extremely low boiling point, which means that they will begin to boil even at room temperature, evaporating and releasing gas into the air. This can be extremely dangerous if you are exposed to VOC emissions for a long period of time, or you are in a confined space. Common examples of VOCs include:

  • Toluene

  • Xylene

  • Acetone

  • Formaldehyde

  • Benzene

When shopping for paint, check the labels to get an idea of a product’s VOC levels. Ideally, you should limit your use of paints that contain VOCs, and always take safety precautions when using them.

By contrast, odourless paint typically contains no or a very low concentration of VOCs in its mixture. Paints of this kind are also often water-based as opposed to petroleum-based. Naturally, you will have to manage your expectations a little bit: odourless paint is by no means completely smell-free. However, the lack of solvents or ammonia will make it considerably easier on the nose than standard, VOC-filled paint. By contrast, odourless paint will smell quite different - a sweeter scent that doesn’t linger and will fade relatively quickly after application with good ventilation.

The Benefits of Odourless, Water-Based Wood Paint

A Safer Choice

Even after it dries, standard paint can release harmful fumes into the air for up to six years afterwards, meaning that they can pose a significant risk to your health. Odourless paint, on the other hand, will never release these fumes, making it a much safer choice. As such, it’s a great option for those who might be painting a nursery or child’s bedroom, as you can rest assured that your little ones won’t be breathing in anything potentially harmful.

Odourless paint should also be used for decorating rooms or hallways in any property where occupants have respiratory problems. This can include everything from mild cases of asthma to more serious, life-threatening issues. In this situation, it is imperative that the circulating air is kept clean, and the high quantities of VOCs in oil-based paints simply won’t help you to achieve that aim.

Environmentally Friendly

Odourless paints are substantially more environmentally friendly than their traditional, chemical-filled counterparts. They are water-based, meaning that they are biodegradable unlike oil. The fact that they are solvent-free also means that there won’t be any harmful chemicals introduced into the ecosystem once they are disposed of. Finally, many odourless paints are made with refined natural oils and resins that are extracted from renewable sources.

Durability

Although it is the case that some odourless paints are more suited to indoor use as they aren’t able to withstand prolonged exposure to the elements, Treatex Eco Colours are hard-wearing and durable enough for indoor and outdoor applications, such as doors, windows, sheds, cladding, cabinets, toys, pet houses and other internal or external joinery.

Colour Choices

Once upon a time, odourless paints were previously only available in earthy and stone colours, as they use much fewer chemicals than paints filled with bold dyes. However, thanks to advancements within the industry, many odourless paints are now available in a wide variety of colours - from bright reds to cool blues. Treatex Eco Colours come in five beautiful primary colours - Red, Yellow, Blue, White and Black - all of which can be mixed to create any colour that you would like. We also offer 30ml sample pots at a highly discounted price, meaning that you can try out a small patch on your wall before committing to a larger tub. While you’re at it, why not pick up a corresponding brush, roller or paint tray from our range?
